Sour Cherry Jam

This Sour Cherry Jam recipe is brought to you by Zoe over at Scout’s Stitches. She also helped review The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener by Niki Jabbour and I’m excited to have her back.

Thank you, Stevie, for having me as a guest today. My name is Zoe and I blog over at Scout’s Stitches. I write about whatever I feel like, mostly cooking, sewing and crafting. Today I will share with you a recipe I made recently that was really delicious.

One of my favorite parts of summer is all of the fresh fruit from the trees. We planted a few fruit trees at my new house last fall, but they won’t be ready for a while. I am lucky to have a nice neighbor who had a good harvest of sour cherries and let me pick as many as I would like. So I made some sour cherry jam. This recipe would work with sweet cherries from the store too.

Sour Cherry Jam Recipe

Makes about 6 cups jam

  • 4 cups sour cherries (stems discarded, pitted and finely chopped)
  • 4 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 box Sure-Jell Fruit Pectin

Directions

  1. Measure chopped cherries into a 8 quart saucepan. Measure sugar into separate bowl.
  2. Stir 1 box of pectin into the saucepan. If desired you can add 1/2 tsp butter to reduce foaming.
  3. Bring mixture to rolling boil on high heat, stirring constantly.
  4. Stir in sugar quickly, return to rolling boil. Boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Remove from heat. Ladle quickly into prepared jars and process in water bath for 10 minutes.

Comments

  1. I was just wondering if this jam actually tastes sour like the cherries or if its sweetened enough to have a nice flavor.

    • Hi Jordan, it’s sweet! It has a ton of sugar. I think you could even try reducing it.
