Super Sow Sunday: Umbrella Greenhouses

Outdoors I’ve sown lettuce, radishes and peas in wine barrels.  These great clear umbrellas make great pop up greenhouses!

Oh, that’s so cool! I never saw those before. It’s really working? It’s warmer in there?

They work wonderfully! It’s warmer and frost fee at night. I only wish I had more.

What a great idea, I guess you have lots of umbrellas, living in Vancouver :)

Are these actual rain umbrellas? They almost look specially made for this purpose! I have the barrels, now I just need to get some clear plastic pop up umbrellas. It looks like they have little zipper compartments on the side so you can reach your arm in, but I’m guessing that’s not what that is?

    Melanie – ha ha!

Jan – Nope, not rain umbrellas – they are made for this purpose and I bought them at a garden sale. The zippered windows are for venting or reaching in (although that doesn’t really work)

Love this idea! I have never seen these before and will definitely be giving them a try. Thanks so much for the info.

    Hi Stevie,

Your berries look good. How amazing to pick you own at home.

I just wanted to let you know that Lee Valley Tools also makes a Pop-Up Net Shelter (35″x35″x20″ tall) that helps shield plants from heavy rain, birds and insects. It comes in a zipper pouch that makes it great for storing flat or hanging. The cost is $9.50.

@flowercents. I use these: http://bit.ly/bjOgcw. But also Siletz are fine on their own in mid/late April with night temps over 7C.
