DIY Dry Shampoo is both inexpensive to make and effective. Plus, this natural dry shampoo is made with easy-to-find ingredients that you likely already have at home.
No matter what kind of hair you have, it will always look best when it’s healthy. As a teen, I remember being so frustrated watching my friends with a stick-straight mane blast their hair with a hairdryer every morning for five minutes and be done. I, On the other hand, had thick, wavy hair that was prone to frizz and breakage if I washed too often.
Like most people in life, I wised up after my teen years. I’ve learned to embrace and be thankful for my naturally thick hair! Rather than strip my hair of those essential natural oils every day, I instead wash my hair about once a week.
That’s not to say I don’t have a day or two of oily hair somewhere within that week. Life happens, right? Thankfully, a little experimentation lead to the creation of this simple DIY dry shampoo recipe. I use this a few times a week in between washes, and no one’s the wiser. It’s pretty awesome!
What is Dry Shampoo?
If you haven’t used dry shampoo before, this will change your life! Dry shampoo is a powder that is applied to the scalp to absorb the excess oil and give the roots of your hair lift.
Using a standard “wet” shampoo can strip your hair of natural oils. This, in turn, will lead to split ends and frizz. I know it seems totally counterintuitive, but overwashing will actually cause your hair to become more oily and make your scalp drier. Not a great combination!
Instead, if you feel like your roots or scalp look a bit oily and could use a quick pick-me-up, reach for dry shampoo. This DIY dry shampoo recipe, in particular, is filled with all kinds of good-for-you plant-based ingredients. You probably already have the majority of these natural dry shampoo supplies at home!
Scented DIY Dry Shampoo
Part of the fun of hair care can include how great everything smells. This DIY is no exception!
For this recipe, I’ve paired rosemary with lavender essential oil. I love the addition of a sweet and floral scent with the pine aroma of rosemary.
Let’s talk a bit about these two ingredients and why they are beneficial for your hair.
Benefits of Rosemary for Hair
Rosemary oil is one of the best essential oils to use in hair. Not only does it add an herbal, clean scent, but it also can help with a wide variety of scalp and hair issues, such as:
- Relieves flaky, irritated scalps
- Stimulates the scalp to promote hair growth
- Increases circulation and blood flow in the scalp
Additionally, the scent of rosemary can help perk you up when you’re energy is dipping. Altogether, rosemary for hair is a sure winner!
Benefits of Lavender Oil for Hair
Likewise, using lavender oil for hair products like natural dry shampoo can invite a host of benefits. In addition to its calming, soothing scent, lavender oil can help keep your hair shiny. Using lavender oil for hair treatments is also said to help deep condition the hair and soothe the scalp.
How to Make DIY Dry Shampoo
Ready to make your own batch of DIY dry shampoo? It’s so easy—this one takes about 5 minutes to put together!
Natural Dry Shampoo Ingredients
- 8 g arrowroot starch
- 5 drops rosemary essential oil
- 4 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 g bentonite clay
- 26 g organic cornstarch
- 2 g organic raw cacao powder*
A quick word about the cacao powder – I have dark hair so I add organic cocoa powder to temper the colour. It also makes my hair smell fantastic! If you have blond or grey hair, then omit the cocoa powder.
Make it!
Measure the ingredients for the DIY dry shampoo into a bowl. It works best if you add them in the order that they are listed in the ingredient list above.
Mix the arrowroot and essential oils together first, then add the clay, cornstarch and cacao powder if using.
Once it’s mixed completely, sift the ingredients into a bowl with a pour spout. Then, add the mixture into a mason jar and seal the lid.
How to Use DIY Dry Shampoo
There are two main methods you can use to add the natural dry shampoo to your hair. First of all, remember that dry shampoo is only for the roots of your hair—you don’t need to coat your entire mane in it!
When you’re ready to use it, grab your mason jar filled with the DIY dry shampoo. Then you can choose one of these application methods:
- Use a fat makeup brush to dust the powder on your scalp. Massage in and brush hair to style.
- Alternatively, you can add the powder to glass spice jars with a shaker top and shake it directly onto your scalp. Massage in and brush hair to style.
That’s it! See how easy it is to make your own natural beauty products? If you made this one, be sure to leave me a comment and let me know how it worked out for you. :)
